Hikes near Curitiba
The Serra do Mar is less than an hour from the city. Three hikes from our catalogue, by effort: Anhangava to start, Morro do Canal for a morning and Pico Paraná, the highest point in the South, for people with miles in their legs.
Morro do Anhangava (1,420 m)
It starts at the IAT base in Borda do Campo, Quatro Barras, inside Serra da Baitaca State Park. Registering at the base on arrival is mandatory, and so is signing out. Free parking near the start, per QBtur. One to two hours up.
Beginners manage it, but the final rock stretch needs care: in May 2021 a young man slipped coming down the rock face and was rescued by helicopter. Forks aren't always signed; download the track to your phone. Closed shoes are a rule (flip-flops and sandals are banned), there are no toilets at the start and IAT asks people not to go on rainy days. The trail closes on 1 May for the Missa da Paz.
See my day on AnhangavaMorro do Canal (1,310 m)
BR-277 toward the coast, then a rural dirt road, about 39 km from Curitiba. The trail starts on private land, with parking at R$ 20 a car and R$ 10 a motorbike, toilets and a snack bar, open 6:00 to 19:00 (Tribuna, date unclear). The summit loop is about 2.2 km and 290 m of climb, but near the top there are near-vertical walls with iron rungs, pins or rope. Don't go alone without experience.

The up and down times come from a 2011 report; Komoot gives about 1h12 for the whole loop. The plan uses your group to work it out.
Pico Paraná (1,877 m)
Extreme level. From BR-116 toward the coast, turn at the Rio Tucum bridge and follow about 6 km of dirt to the IAT base. In-person registration at the base is mandatory, with a risk waiver; entering by another access is fined R$ 500 to R$ 10,000. About 7 hours up and 5 down on a day trip: people who do it in a day leave a little after 4 am and take over 12 hours. It has its own guide: Pico Paraná: what to know first.
In the Serra do Mar the trail and the rock get very slippery after rain. Your free day shows the rain forecast for the hours you're out.
