Agulhas Negras: when you can go

The highest peak in our catalogue, 2,791 m, in Itatiaia National Park. Before weather and fitness, one question: is the road open? From November to February it usually isn't.

Itatiaia, RJHard2,791 m

The access road to Abrigo Rebouças is closed from November to February, while the red-belly toad breeds, and can also close without notice. Before you leave, check on the park's website that it's open.

The peak's rules

Getting there

From Rio, along the Via Dutra to the Resende and Itatiaia area, then BR-485 to Posto 3, the Parte Alta gate, at km 13.5 on the border with Itamonte (MG). From Posto 3 to Abrigo Rebouças is about 3 km of dirt road, for small vehicles only; vans just drop off and return to Posto 3. The climb from Rebouças (about 2,350 m) to the summit takes about 3 hours.

Example: a day in season, hour by hour

07:00Posto 3 opens. Ticket bought ahead, form signed.
07:20About 3 km of road to Abrigo Rebouças.
07:45Start of the trail, well before the 10:00 cutoff.
~10:45Summit, 2,791 m, about 3 h later, rope sections included.
18:00The Parte Alta closes. Be out before.

This is the trail with the least confirmed information in our catalogue: the rules come from the January 2023 visitation protocol, and no descent time was found. Check everything with the park.

The best season

The park's mountain season is the dry winter. Above 2,700 m it's cold and windy and the weather closes in fast. In November, with the road closed, the catalogue's alternative from Rio is Pedra do Sino, also outside its dry season.
