Pedra do Sino in a day

The highest point of the Serra dos Órgãos has no ropes and no technical sections. What's hard is the distance: about 22 km round trip, which many people underestimate. You can do it in a day from Rio if you start when the gate opens.

Getting there

BR-040, then BR-116 toward Teresópolis at the junction: about 92 km and 1h30 by car to the Teresópolis gate of Serra dos Órgãos National Park. There's parking at the gate; sources give no price. Without a car, a bus from Rio to Teresópolis, then a taxi or ride-hailing car to the gate.

The fee isn't clear: a February 2025 blog says entry is free, Lonely Planet cites R$ 52. No booking is needed for the day hike.

The way up

Bring trekking poles (they help on the first climb and the 4-hour descent) and a filter or chlorine tablets: water is only at a few points.

Example: the day hike, hour by hour

05:00Leave Rio. About 1h30 by road.
07:00The Teresópolis gate opens. Start of the trail.
~08:00Véu de Noiva waterfall, after the zigzag climb.
~12:30Summit, 2,275 m (about 5h30 up).
13:00Start down, about 4 h.
~17:00Back at the gate.

The gate is open 7:00 to 16:00 per a 2025 blog, and no source says how late you can leave or the cutoff to start the 22 km. Check with the park before you go.

When to go

May to September, drier: it's the park's mountaineering season. In summer rain is frequent and makes the path slippery.

It's November, outside the dry season. The free preview says whether your Saturday is worth it and, if not, shows better days.
