When to turn back
The most important question of the day isn't when to leave: it's when to turn around, even short of the top. It comes from three things: when the park closes, how long the descent takes and the day's weather.
The cutoffs the parks publish
- Agulhas Negras: entry by 10:00 for the peak; the Parte Alta closes at 18:00.
- Saltos do Rio Preto: entry on foot until noon; every attraction left by 18:00.
- Pico do Itacolomi: the park asks you to start by 11:00; it closes at 17:00.
- Pedra da Gávea: entry 8:00 to 14:00; out through the gate by 17:00 (18:00 in summer).
- Cachoeira do Tabuleiro: pool access until 14:00.
- Pico da Tijuca: trail entry at Bom Retiro until 15:00; everyone out by 18:00.
- Cachoeira Santa Bárbara: last departure for the falls around 15:00.
- Pedra Bonita: the trail can only be started until 16:00.
- Vale da Lua: last entry 16:00; closes at 17:00.
The limits the weather sets
- Pico dos Marins, November to March: afternoon storms. Be down before midday.
- Pico Paraná: it gets dark early on the Caratuva side; a day trip takes over 12 h.
- Fog on the Marins slabs: wait for it to lift or go back the way you came.
- Bonete trail: if the first climb already feels hard, turn back; the rest is harder.
Example: counting back on Itacolomi
The park closes at 17:00. The descent takes about 2h30. So the latest time to leave the summit is 14:30. The climb takes about 3 h: to have any margin, start by 11:00, which is exactly what the park asks.
| 11:00 | Latest time to start up. |
|---|---|
| ~14:00 | Summit, about 3 h later. |
| 14:30 | Turn back, at the top or not. |
| ~17:00 | The gate, right as the park closes. |
An example with times estimated from the sources. No margin at all: this is the limit, not the plan.
In your free day, the times board shows "DOWN BY": the time for your group to turn around, worked out from your pace, the sunset and the storm forecast. For the park's own hours, check the list above.
