Hikes near São Paulo for a weekend

From a hike inside the city to one that means leaving before dawn: eight trails from our catalogue, sorted by distance from the capital, with what each one asks of you.

São PauloDay trip or 2 days

Close: half a day

Pico do Jaraguá (1,135 m)

Inside the city, at km 18 of the Anhanguera highway. Free entry, Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00 (a 2021 page gives walkers 10:00 to 15:00: check). The Pai Zé trail is about 3.6 km round trip, short but steep to the end, with a long stairway at the top. Sources point to the descent as the riskiest part: tired legs and twisted ankles.

Pedra Grande, Atibaia (1,418 m)

About 60 to 70 km away, via Fernão Dias and Dom Pedro I. Open 8:00 to 18:00 (2016 information). Around 2 h up by the Minha Deusa, Monges or Mangueira trails, steep almost all the way with some scrambling. One guide doesn't recommend it for children. You can bus to Atibaia and take the Águas Espraiadas line from the urban terminal. Start early: one hiker arrived at 10:00 and found it very hot.

Cachoeira dos Pretos, Joanópolis

About 110 km and 2 h to Joanópolis, then 18 km of paved road to the park. More an outing than a hike: a short path with wooden bridges to a 154 m waterfall. Free entry; parking is R$ 15, cash or card, no Pix. No food allowed. Busy in summer: go early.

Further: a full day, or two

Pedra do Baú, São Bento do Sapucaí (1,950 m)

About 200 km (3h30) to São Bento, then 22 km to the gate, the last 4 km on dirt. Climbing the Baú itself, up 320 iron rungs on a near-vertical wall, needs a booking on the park's website and a harness, carabiners, rope and helmet; sources recommend a guide. Without them, Bauzinho takes about 10 minutes and gives the best view of the Baú. Entry R$ 18 and parking R$ 20 (2023 prices).

Pedra da Macela, Cunha (1,840 m)

Take SP-171 from Cunha toward Paraty to around km 66, then the dirt road. About 5 km round trip and 300 m of climb on a road-like path with no forks and a steep final stretch. The only water is at the start. Known for the sunrise: groups arrive around 4:40. See the sunrise hikes guide.

Pico dos Marins, Piquete (2,420 m)

About 220 km and 3h30, via the Dutra to Lorena and BR-459 to Piquete. A hard hike: about 12 km round trip, 860 m of climb, 4h30 up and 3h30 down, over rock slabs that fork and vanish in fog. November has its own guide: Pico dos Marins in November.

Pico do Itaguaré and the Bonete trail

Itaguaré (2,308 m) starts near Passa Quatro (MG), about 250 km via the Dutra, with roughly 3 h up and several forks: the first time, go with a guide or a GPS track. The Bonete trail on Ilhabela is about 24 km round trip; for less, go only as far as Cachoeira da Laje. It's in the beach hikes guide.
